Today, we discussed writing critical/analytical essay conclusions. I gave you two websites to go to for additional help: http://essayinfo.com/ and http://www.essaystart.com/

You essay is tomorrow and your multiple choice exam is on Friday.

I then gave you the following notes:

Concluding paragraph

The fifth paragraph is the summary paragraph.
· Remind the reader that, through the evidence, you have proven the main points; therefore, your thesis is a sound (good) one. You want to convince your reader that yours is the right point of view and well supported as such.

·This paragraph should contain:
1. an allusion to the pattern used in the introductory paragraph,
2. a restatement of the thesis statement (see above)
3. a summary of the three main points from the body of the essay (see above).
4. a final statement that shows some deeper understanding of the topic or the issue presented (see 1), (reflection on topic; a cause/effect relationship if there is a change related to the topic: an alternate ending).
Living unconstrained by conventions

Nora’s struggle with convention would not be as profound today as it was then. Today, women do step out of their assigned roles: entering the workforce, being equal partners with their husbands, and, most importantly, being regarded as equal under the eyes of the law. However, even today, a woman leaving her children is suspect. Perhaps we still need to work then, on seeing men as equal when it comes to the roles of nurturers.

Today, we discussed how to approach critical analytical topic questions. I am stressing here that the "Text" you will be referring to is not the topic of your paper. Look instead at the key words. Even then, you are focusing on what the author is thinking about a topic and then using the text to provide the evidence to support this. I stressed the importance of outlining your ideas before you write (looking at the topic word and the text to see how they are present - and then examining the outcome to arrive at a possible thesis).
I then gave you the remainder of the class-time to work on your A Doll's House visual. Keep in mind that you will be writing your first essay on Thursday and your first multiple choice, reading comprehension exam on Friday (a stressful week).

Monday, September 26, 2011

Today, we discussed the importance of attention getters in the writing of the critical/analytical essay. We identified a number of types of attention-getters, which I have listed below:
definition
quotation
little known or striking fact
statement that you intend to challenge
general statement about human nature (relating to topic)
anecdote
rhetorical question

I then gave you a handout on the introductory paragraph as well as a handout on previously used critical/analytical questions from Alberta Learning.
I finished up by mapping out A Doll's House using the 2005 question.
For tonight, I want you to highlight all of the topic words in these questions.

Thursday, September 22, 2011

Today, we discussed essay writing and looked at how to utilize the Alberta Education websight. I have pasted this down below (the address is to their website).

http://education.alberta.ca/admin/testing.aspx

You need an attention getter about the topic
· Definitions
· Little known fact
· Quote
· Anecdote (little story)

Introduce the literature (genre, title, author, overview as it
relates to topic)

Must have a thesis (an arguable opinion that is on the topic)

Must have main points that will be proven by evidence in

the body of the paper

Body Paragraphs

Always start with an opinion (main point) that you will then
spend the rest of the paragraph proving

Follow this with evidence with connections to main point
Stated

Conclude paragraph with an opinion tying back to the main
Point

Conclusion:
Remind the reader that, through the evidence, you have
proven that your thesis is a sound (good) one.

Get outside the box a bit to reflect on the outcome
(alternate ending… what happened as a result…) to
Show a higher level of understanding on topic.

Today, we discussed how to create a visual study tool for your independent novels as well as the purpose. I then gave you the class to create one for the play A Doll's House. I expect that you will create one for every novel you read in class so you will have it at the end to prepare from for the final.

Due Date: Thursday, September 29, 2011

Thursday, September 15, 2011

Thursday, September 15, 2011

Today, we finished reading Act II of A Doll's House. Some of the literary devices we came across while reading and that were stressed were euphemisms, parallelism, and dramatic irony (the words have a different meaning for the audience than they do for some of the characters).
I then had you answer the following question:

Summarize Act II of A Doll's House with as many details relating to the plot (conflict/complications) as possible.
In what ways are you like Nora (as in “different people in different rooms”)?

This was handed in at the end of class. Obviously, if you weren't here, this is homework, as is reading up to the end of Act II.

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Today, you handed in your Act One questions. We then read Act Two up to the end of the "stocking" scene between Nora and Dr. Rank. We will finish this act tomorrow.

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

Today, you were given time to finish the Act One questions for A Doll's House. I met with the last of you to discuss your summary (which was handed in yesterday - I met with most of you then). Hopefully, our discussions will help you with your writing when the next assignment arrives.

Monday, September 12, 2011

Monday, September 12, 2011

Today, you handed in your paragraph on "A Doll's House". You were then given questions to answer. I am allowing you to answer these in pairs; however, keep in mind that each person needs to contribute equally to the discussion (only one has to type the answers in though). If you do this together and both contribute, you should arrive at answers which are much deeper in understanding and yet more concise.
We didn't finish these questions today, but, as I want you to experience the full paired activity together, I will give you time in class to complete this tomorrow. Be sure to have your independent novel with you so you will have something to do if you finish early.

Friday, September 9, 2011

Friday, September 9, 2011

Today, we finished reading Act I of A Doll's House. I then gave you the following question to answer in paragraph form:

Summarize Act I from your memory. What is the major issue in this play? What are the concerns of the main characters in relation to this issue (include Christine here)?

This is due for Monday.

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Today, I showed you guys a video to introduce the journal topic, which was on the conflict between pursuing a personal desire and choosing to conform.

I then finished up the introduction for the modern drama unit. I also handed out a reading entitled "Historical Context" in order to help you understand the play "A Doll's House".

Roles were then assigned and we began reading Act I.

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

Thursday, September 7, 2011

Today, we finished up on the introductory notes for the modern drama unit
Today was also the day that you started your independent novel. Keep in mind that you are expected to read for two hours a week outside of class

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Today, we started out on a discussion of values (using the short story All By Myself as a motivator). You then wrote a journal on values focusing on your own.
I then introduced the modern drama unit by watching part of Rango. You were given drama terms on Friday, which we will then discuss. From here, we will move on to an introduction of modern drama (powerpoint).
All of you were expected to have your supplies and novel today. If you are still unsure of a novel, see me and I will see what I can find for you.

Friday, September 2, 2011

Friday, September 2, 2011

Today, the plan is as follows (I am putting this up in advance. If anything changes, I will alter it):

1. Get the following texts from the library: Fit to Print, Viewpoints 12, On Stage 3

2. Finish discussing the course outline (especially the independent novel section)

3. Read the booklet I am providing entitled "Elements of Drama (Elizabethan and Modern)"
What you will notice is that I am putting things that I think are important for this class on goldenrod yellow paper. This means I want you to keep it and that you will be utilizing parts of it throughout the term.

Homework (If needed) is to have the booklet read. Highlight the terms you already know so you can begin to memorize the ones you don't. As you learn them, they can then be highlighted.
