Today, you were given a booklet to read (nine pages) and then some questions to answer. The purpose of this is to introduce you to Elizabethan theatre and to reintroduce you to the words used at this time (archaic). The questions are due tomorrow (if you were not here, they are in your portfolio).

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Today, we discussed the analysis and questions for the poem "Cameras". I also informed the class that they will write a personal response to texts tomorrow (and their Poetry unit M.C. on Friday). We discussed the expectations for the personal response (I handed out a rubrics) and even discussed how to answer a question based on a poem (using "Cameras").

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Today, we discussed the final. I am certain that I will ask you to write down the steps you need to follow to actively read a poem. I am also going to ask you what needs to be included (and in MY order) in a critical/analytical introductory paragraph. This exam is on Friday so study these, as well as your literary terms and definitions.
I then gave you the poem "Cameras" to analyze. This was followed with questions, which are due tomorrow.

Friday, October 21, 2011

Today, you will be given your questions back from yesterday's class (in your portfolios... If you weren't here yesterday, the copies of what you need are in your portfolios as well). You will be put into groups of 4 and then given a long answer sheet for the poem "To Certain Friends" to fill in.
This is your task today. I expect one copy to be handed in in pristine condition. If you really screw up, you can choose to type it.

Thursday, October 20, 2011

· No journal today
· Hand out the poem “To Certain Friends”
· Students are to analyze it using the eight steps for poetry analysis they already have
· They are to do this independently
· Once finished, they are to come up and show their work (see they did it)
· Hand out the questions (multiple choice) for this poem
These are due today, guys.

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

· Working in pairs, discuss the analysis from yesterday (compare outcomes, figurative devices found) and themes.

· Discuss the themes from the list provided as part of the introduction yesterday to determine if you could defend them.

· Hand out the sheet explaining the poem “Mending Wall”. Read and discuss as a class.

· Analyze the poem as a class, discussing the eight steps (students can take turns if needed)

· Watch the video on “Mending Wall” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nE9Zpa9-S9Y&list=QL&feature=BF

· Discuss how it mirrors or contradicted the students’ perceptions.

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

You were given the poem "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost to analyze.
You were also given a sheet with information about the poem.
Today, you were to analyze it completely using the steps (including step 3 - the one on meters... this is why there is space between the first four lines).
You are to complete this on your own. I will allow time for discussion tomorrow.
Also, there are theme questions on the information page. These will not be done today as I want you to work on your own.

Monday, October 17, 2011

Today, we analyzed the poem(s) "Another Brick in the Wall". The greatest "learning" which came from this was learning what double negatives are. If this is a concept that you still have difficulty with, look it up and examine some of the examples on line. In addition, we discussed the final exam and whether you should write the 30-1 exam or the 30-2. I am wiling to accommodate you with the the 30-2 (keep you in this class), but that will not result in a change in assigments - just in the way they are marked. I need your decisions ASAP. I will discuss what I think you should do, but the decision in the end is yours.

Friday, October 14, 2011

Today, we discussed the most efficient way to analyze a poem. I then gave you the poem "Another Brick in the Wall Part 1 and Part 2 " (Pink Floyd). You can find this on line if you weren't here (it is also in your portfolio). You are then to analyze it using the steps below:

1. Look at the title of this poem. What might it mean? Write what you think down.
2. Look at the layout of the poem. Note the number of stanzas, lines, rhyme schemes and any layout that deviates from a flush left set up. Write these down.
3. Scan the first two stanzas of the poem to determine the meter, feet, and type (iambic or trochaic) or whether there is no set meter at all. Write this down.
4. Read the poem through, highlighting and paying attention to periods, commas and other punctuation marks (read it properly). During this read, also highlight words that are not familiar.
5. Look up the definitions of the highlighted words and put them right on the page.
6. Examine the poem once more. Identify any figures of speech you see and define them. Identify allusions, research and write them down as well.
7. Reread the poem again. Now, try to paraphrase the stanzas (put in your own words succinctly).
8. Identify the speaker of the poem (it is NOT the writer but the persona)8. add a theme based on what you have paraphrased.
9. Determine who the speaker of the poem is (this is NOT necessarily the writer).

This is due for Monday.

Today, you were given additional time to get through the poetry definitions you were given yesterday.

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Today, we started the poetry unit. I gave you a list of terms o define using the Internet as your source. You were to answer these by putting the answers in your own words (no cutting and pasting - you don't "learn" that way). If you were not here, the terms are in your portfolio (use these instructions not the ones on the top of the definitions right now).
